Party accuses him of divisive tactics, while urging focus on coalition unity
The National Youth Wing of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised Dr. Tanko Yunusa, who describes himself as the Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, accusing him of attempting to derail the unity of the opposition coalition.
In a statement signed by ADC National Youth Leader, Balarabe Rufa’i, the party described Dr. Yunusa’s recent comments as “self-serving” and “politically irrelevant,” arguing that his outbursts were designed to create division at a time when Nigerians were searching for credible alternatives to the ruling establishment.
According to the ADC, Dr. Yunusa had “failed in every political engagement he has ever undertaken,” pointing to his inability to deliver his polling unit for Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, during the 2023 elections. The youth wing further argued that Dr. Yunusa had never formally participated in ADC activities, and therefore could not dictate the party’s direction.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recognized the leadership of the coalition under the ADC platform. The matter is settled. Every genuine stakeholder must now formally register with the ADC,” the statement read. “Nobody should be misled by Tanko’s antics.”
The party emphasised that its coalition was founded on “sacrifice, loyalty, and collective vision,” and highlighted the work of its youth wing across all six geopolitical zones. It accused Dr. Yunusa of undermining these efforts, insisting that his statements were more about protecting his “fragile ego” than advancing democracy.
Mr. Rufa’i also reaffirmed that Mr. Obi, often associated with the Obidient Movement, had consistently stated that his political pursuit was for the betterment of Nigeria rather than personal gain. “This clarity has never been in doubt,” he said, urging stakeholders to remain focused on the coalition’s broader vision.
The ADC youth wing called on members and supporters to disregard Dr. Yunusa’s remarks and to concentrate on preparing for transparent primaries within the coalition framework.
Efforts to reach Dr. Tanko Yunusa for his response were unsuccessful as of press time.
