Arewa group faults Tinubu administration over exclusion of northern youths

The Matasan Arewa Youth Development Initiative has expressed disappointment over what it described as the continued neglect and exclusion of Northern youths from key roles in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kano, the group’s National Coordinator, Abba Muhammad, said it was disheartening that almost two years after the 2023 general elections, many young people who worked tirelessly to ensure Tinubu’s victory have been left out of governance.

“We campaigned, we mobilized, we ensured victory. Yet, nearly two years into this administration, the young people of Arewa who stood at the forefront of this political struggle have been ignored,” Muhammad said.

He said the group had expected the administration to keep its promises of youth inclusion and empowerment but was disappointed that those who contributed to the campaign are not being consulted or engaged in decision-making processes.

“We are not asking for handouts. We are demanding recognition, inclusion, and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to nation-building,” he added.

To draw attention to the issue, Muhammad announced that the group would embark on a regional awareness tour across the 19 Northern states.

He explained that the tour aims to sensitize communities about the state of youth representation and push for greater participation of Northern youths in governance and national development.

“This tour will help us reconnect with our people, reignite political awareness, and remind leaders that the youth deserve a voice in shaping Nigeria’s future,” he said.

The Matasan Arewa Youth Development Initiative also called on President Tinubu and key stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC) to honor their campaign promises and prioritize competent young people in political appointments and policymaking.

According to the group, the awareness campaign will begin later this month in Kano and will feature town hall meetings, media engagements, and community outreach programs aimed at mobilizing Northern youths for active civic participation.
