The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has announced the death of its founding President and Council Chairman, Chief David Olorunleke, a revered figure widely regarded as the “Doyen of Taxation” in Nigeria.
His passing was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by the Registrar/Chief Executive of CITN, Afolake Oso, who described Olorunleke as a pioneering leader whose vision and dedication helped shape Nigeria’s modern tax administration.
Chief Olorunleke, who served as CITN President between 1985 and 1995, was also a former Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Finance, and Member of the FIRS Board.
“Chief Olorunleke departed this life peacefully in the early hours of Friday, October 24, 2025,” Oso said. “He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and an enduring champion of the tax profession in Nigeria. We kindly request your prayers, reflections, and tributes as we celebrate his life, honour his achievements, and reaffirm our commitment to advancing the profession he helped build.”
Condolence registers have been opened at the Institute’s offices in Lagos and Abuja to allow members and the public to pay their respects.
Chief Olorunleke is remembered for his pivotal role in professionalising taxation in Nigeria and establishing the framework for what has become one of the country’s most respected financial institutions.
