Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has introduced a new online encyclopedia called Groikipedia, positioning it as a rival to Wikipedia, which Musk has repeatedly accused of political and ideological bias.

The platform, launched on Monday as version 0.1, already featured more than 885,000 articles by evening though still far behind Wikipedia’s over seven million English-language entries. Musk announced that a version 1.0 is on the way, promising it would be “ten times better” than the current one.

“The goal of Grok and Grokipedia.com is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive towards that goal,” Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The launch had originally been scheduled for late September but was delayed. Musk explained the postponement was necessary to “purge out the propaganda” before going live.

The billionaire entrepreneur has long criticized Wikipedia, accusing its volunteer editors of political bias. In 2024, he claimed the site was “controlled by far-left activists” and urged people to stop donating to it. In August, Musk further argued that “Wikipedia cannot be used as a definitive source for Community Notes” on X, alleging that its editorial control is “extremely left-biased.”

According to xAI, Grokipedia’s articles are AI-generated through Grok, the company’s conversational assistant. A sample entry about Musk himself describes him as someone who has “influenced broader debates on technological progress, demographic decline, and institutional biases, often via X,” while also noting “criticisms from legacy media outlets that exhibit systemic left-leaning tilts.”

Founded in 2001, Wikipedia remains a non-profit, volunteer-driven encyclopedia that allows public editing and claims to maintain a neutral point of view. It is largely funded through user donations.

As of publication, Wikipedia had not responded to media inquiries about Musk’s latest challenge to its dominance in the online knowledge space.
