U.S. President Donald Trump and Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi have signed a landmark agreement to boost cooperation on rare earths and other critical minerals  resources vital for electric vehicles, defense systems, and renewable energy technologies.

The framework deal, signed during Trump’s first visit to Japan since returning to office, aims to diversify global supply chains and reduce dependence on China. Trump hailed Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, as a “great leader” and “strong partner for America,” emphasizing closer economic and strategic ties.

Takaichi described the partnership as the start of a “golden age” in U.S.–Japan relations, pledging to strengthen defense spending and economic resilience. The agreement is seen as a key step toward securing resources critical to national security and clean energy innovation.
