Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was hospitalised on Monday after a road accident in the Makun area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, who said the crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m.

According to eyewitness accounts, the accident happened just before the Danco Filling Station in Makun, near the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane.

An eyewitness, Adeniyi Orojo, said the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua, with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck. The vehicle was part of a two-car convoy, with a Pajero SUV carrying his security detail following behind.

Joshua reportedly sat behind the driver, alongside another passenger, while two others occupied the front seats, making four occupants in the Lexus.

Orojo said Joshua sustained minor injuries, while two passengers died at the scene.

“Other eyewitnesses and I began rescue efforts and flagged down vehicles for help. Federal Road Safety Corps officials arrived shortly after. Sadly, the passenger beside the driver and the person seated next to Joshua died on the spot,” he said.

Confirming the incident, Oluseyi stated that Joshua and other injured persons were rushed to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.

“The Ogun State Police Command confirms a road accident in front of Sinoma, before Danco, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Anthony Joshua and other injured persons have been taken to the hospital,” he said.
