Africa is one step closer to transforming its energy future as final preparations are underway for the launch of the African Energy Bank (AEB) — a new pan-African financing institution set to fund major energy projects across the continent.

At a high-level review meeting held in, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, confirmed that the launch is on track, with all key milestones either completed or progressing as scheduled.

“The AEB is poised to become a transformative financing platform for energy projects across the continent,” Lokpobiri said. “We remain fully aligned with our continental partners.”

The meeting brought together major stakeholders, including Prof. Benedict Oramah, President of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), and Dr. Omar Farouk Ibrahim, Secretary General of the African Petroleum Producers’ Organization (APPO).

The AEB is expected to mobilize capital, boost energy security, and enhance access to affordable and sustainable energy for African nations. Legal frameworks and governance structures are already in place, with strong financial commitments from member states and private investors.

“We are impressed by Nigeria’s dedication to meeting the stringent requirements for the bank’s establishment,” said Dr. Ibrahim. “The collaboration we witnessed today signals a unified resolve to deliver sustainable energy to Africans.”

Prof. Oramah added that Afreximbank is ready to deploy its financing and structuring capabilities to give the AEB global credibility from day one.

“We are committed to ensuring the bank launches with the strength to attract global co-investors,” he said.

The AEB’s official launch timeline and inaugural board meeting date are expected to be announced soon. Stakeholders have pledged to maintain transparency and efficiency throughout the final stages.

“Our collective focus is on delivering a bank that catalyzes investment, accelerates energy development, and drives economic growth across Africa,” Senator Lokpobiri emphasized.
