Nigerian Afrobeats star Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, known professionally as Ayra Starr, has been named the Best International Act at the 2025 BET Awards, marking a significant milestone in her fast-rising global career.

The 22-year-old outperformed a competitive field of African nominees, including South Africa’s breakout artist Tyla, Nigerian superstar Rema, and Ghanaian rapper Black Sherif, to secure the coveted honour.

The award show, which took place on Monday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, is renowned for celebrating outstanding Black talent in music, film, sports, and culture. This year’s edition was hosted by comedian Kevin Hart, who returned to the role after previously leading the show in 2011. Hart kicked off the evening with his signature wit, delivering sharp commentary on high-profile entertainment figures such as Kanye West.

Ayra Starr’s journey with the BET Awards began in 2022 with a nomination for Best New International Act. Since then, she has continued to gain recognition, receiving nods in subsequent years for categories like Best International Act (2023), the BET Her Award (2024) for her hit single “Commas”, and three nominations in the 2025 awards cycle.

Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar emerged as the evening’s most decorated artist, securing four major awards: Album of the Year for GNX, *Best Male Hip Hop Artist, Video of the Year for Not Like Us, and Best Collaboration with SZA on the track Luther.

Ayra Starr’s win not only reflects her growing influence within the international music scene but also highlights the expanding reach of Afrobeats on global platforms.
