President Bola Tinubu addressed a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday to mark Democracy Day 2025. In the speech, he reflected on Nigeria’s journey since 1999, paid tribute to June 12 heroes, and reaffirmed his pledge to uphold democratic principles.

Tinubu thanked former President Buhari for formally recognizing June 12 and MKO Abiola’s victory in 1993. He emphasized the parliamentary role in defending democracy—from opposing third-term bids in 2006 to enabling Jonathan’s rise in 2010.

The president dismissed concerns over a one-party state, vowing competitive politics and welcoming defections into the APC. He invited lawmakers to introduce legislation fostering economic growth, food security, and industrial development.

He highlighted early successes: 3.4% GDP growth in 2024, stable food prices, stronger foreign reserves, and improved infrastructure initiatives including fibre-optic networks. The launch of a N100 billion National Credit Guarantee Company aims to support SMEs.

On national security, Tinubu commended military forces and pledged continued support. He also reiterated commitment to a tolerant democracy protecting civil liberties and free speech.

In celebration of June 12’s legacy, Tinubu awarded national honours—including posthumous titles to Kudirat Abiola, MKO Abiola’s wife—and pardoned some June 12 activists. He also decorated National Assembly leaders who previously received honours.

Closing his address, the president urged citizens to uphold freedom, accountability, justice, and active participation in democracy.
