Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is reportedly unwell and undergoing medical treatment in the United Kingdom, sources close to his family have confirmed.

The 82-year-old former leader, who stepped down on 29 May 2023 after completing two terms in office, has been outside the country since April. Initially believed to have travelled for a routine medical check-up, Buhari reportedly became seriously ill shortly after arriving in London.

“There are conflicting reports about when exactly he became unwell,” one source was quoted as saying. “Some say he fell ill in Nigeria and was flown out. Others insist he only took ill after arriving in London for regular medical checks.”

Throughout his presidency, Buhari was frequently criticized for relying on foreign healthcare, particularly in the UK, while Nigerian hospitals struggled with underfunding and lack of facilities. His frequent medical trips became a point of national debate, symbolizing the country’s ongoing struggle with developing a functional healthcare system.

According to report Buhari’s condition reportedly improved shortly after leaving office in 2023, but deteriorated again in April this year. Since then, he has remained overseas, continuing treatment.

Garba Shehu, the former president’s longtime spokesperson, confirmed Buhari’s condition in response to media inquiries.

“Following your enquiry, I wish to state as follows: It is true that the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, is unwell. He has been receiving treatment in the UK,” Shehu stated.

The nature of Buhari’s illness has not been officially disclosed, and his prolonged absence has fueled speculation about his condition.
