The United Republic of Tanzania has endorsed Nigeria’s bid for election into Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, citing strong bilateral relations and Nigeria’s past support for Tanzania’s own maritime ambitions.

Tanzanian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Selestine Kakele, conveyed this in a message to Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, according to a statement issued Wednesday by Bolaji Akinola, the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications.

Kakele described Nigeria and Tanzania as natural allies with shared goals in maritime development and a common vision for Africa’s voice in global maritime policy. He noted that Tanzania’s support is also rooted in gratitude for Nigeria’s previous support at the IMO and expressed plans to send a team of Tanzanian maritime experts to Nigeria to understudy key agencies in the sector.

Oyetola thanked Tanzania for its endorsement, stressing that a seat on the IMO Council would empower Nigeria to represent African interests in promoting safer shipping, fair maritime trade, and sustainable ocean resources.

“Nigeria’s active port system and maritime policies make us a worthy African representative,” the Minister said, while highlighting ongoing efforts, including a national shipping line through public-private partnerships.

He added that maritime collaboration is vital for Africa’s economic growth and welcomed Tanzania’s planned expert visit. Oyetola also encouraged mutual investment in the marine and blue economy sectors of both countries.
