The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather outlook warning of persistent thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rains across the country, with high risks of flooding in parts of the northern region.

The forecast, released on Saturday by NiMet’s Central Forecast Office, covers Sunday, August 24, to Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

On Sunday, August 24, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Taraba, and Kaduna in the morning, extending to Kano, Katsina, and other northern states by evening. The central states of Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, and the FCT are also expected to experience thunderstorms, while the south will see cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall.

By Monday, August 25, NiMet forecasts widespread thunderstorms in the north, warning of possible floods in Borno and Yobe. The central states, including Abuja, are expected to have light rains, while southern states such as Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and Cross River will see intermittent showers.

On Tuesday, August 26, thunderstorms and moderate rains will again sweep across the north, with NiMet warning of a high likelihood of flooding in Bauchi, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Borno, and Yobe. The central states will record light rains, while southern states including Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom will also see light showers.

NiMet advised residents to take precautions against potential flooding, stressing that farmers should avoid applying fertilizers and pesticides before the rains to prevent nutrient loss. The agency further cautioned drivers to avoid movement during heavy downpours, while vulnerable groups were urged to keep warm as cooler night-time temperatures are expected.

“Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports for flight planning, while residents should stay updated through NiMet’s weather channels,” the advisory stated.
