Nigeria has formally endorsed the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), launched by China at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Plus (SCO+) meeting in Tianjin, placing the country among early supporters of efforts to reshape the global order.

The GGI builds on Beijing’s earlier frameworks the Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI) and is designed to promote broader international representation, rule of law, and collective responses to challenges such as climate change, digital inequality, and emerging technologies.

In a statement on Wednesday, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said Abuja considered the framework a timely contribution ahead of the United Nations’ 80th anniversary.

“Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest economies and an active participant in multilateral diplomacy, views the GGI as a valuable platform for advancing shared priorities, including reform of the United Nations, inclusive governance in emerging domains such as artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and outer space, and the promotion of equitable development,” Ebienfa said.

He noted that Nigeria particularly welcomed the initiative’s emphasis on five foundational principles: Sovereign Equality, Rule of Law, Multilateralism, People-Centered Governance, and Results-Oriented Action.

The statement stressed that the GGI aligned with Nigeria’s national development goals, its principle of strategic autonomy, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

“Through its support for the GGI, Nigeria reaffirms its enduring commitment to a more just, inclusive, and effective international order, one that reflects the aspirations of all peoples and upholds the principles of shared responsibility and mutual respect,” Ebienfa added.
