Three patients on life support at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) died after the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) cut off power to the facility over a ₦949.88 million debt. Hospital spokesperson Hauwa Dutse confirmed the deaths, explaining that four patients were on ventilatory support in the ICU when the outage occurred.

KEDCO’s spokesman, Sani Bala, said the hospital also owes ₦108.95 million for August and risks further sanctions if not settled. He added that the disconnection followed resistance to efforts to separate hospital power supply from residential staff quarters.

The hospital said supply was restored after an emergency meeting with KEDCO and the Kano State Police Commissioner, with both parties pledging cooperation to prevent a recurrence.
