As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has unveiled a strategic plan to reduce the cost of essential commodities, ensuring that every household can observe the season with dignity.
Speaking at a high-level meeting with stakeholders and community leaders, Governor Bago emphasized the government’s commitment to alleviating the economic burden on residents.
“Our goal is to ensure that everyone, especially the vulnerable, has access to food at affordable prices during Ramadan,” Governor Bago stated. “We will be cutting market prices by 40% to 50%, and over 50 million bags of grains are set for distribution across the state.”
The governor called on traders and suppliers to comply with the government-mandated price reductions, urging them to act with integrity and compassion.
“This initiative is not for profit but for the well-being of our people. We must all act with the fear of Allah and ensure fairness in distribution,” he added.
Beyond the immediate food relief, Governor Bago unveiled ambitious agricultural initiatives aimed at strengthening Niger State’s economy.
In a groundbreaking move, the state government has entered into a partnership with Saudi Arabia to breed one million goats and rams, as well as develop high-yield dairy cows capable of producing 25 liters of milk per day.
“This initiative will not only boost food security but also create jobs and empower our farmers,” the governor said. He further announced plans to produce three million rams for Eid-Adha in 2025, reinforcing the state’s growing livestock sector.
Additionally, Niger State has received an invitation from the Brazilian government to collaborate on livestock development, a move expected to introduce modern techniques that will benefit local farmers.
Recognizing the role of women in agriculture, Governor Bago reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering one million women in the sector. “Women are the backbone of our agricultural economy, and their full participation is key to sustainable development,” he noted.
The governor also highlighted ongoing efforts to combat fraud and mismanagement in government spending. He proudly announced that through anti-corruption measures, the state had saved 5 billion Naira, which is now being reinvested in the construction of new primary healthcare centers.
