The Adamawa State Police Command on Friday held its maiden Award and Commendation Day, celebrating the Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, for what officials described as his tireless efforts in tackling insecurity across the state.
The ceremony, held in Yola, attracted dignitaries including government officials, religious leaders, service commanders and traditional rulers, all of whom gathered to commend the police leadership and personnel for their role in maintaining law and order.
According to the Command, the event was designed not only to honour the Commissioner but also to recognise officers and community stakeholders who have contributed significantly to peacebuilding and community policing initiatives.
Several police officers received awards for distinguished and selfless service in safeguarding local communities. Community leaders and members of vigilante groups were also honoured for providing credible intelligence and supporting security operations, including the rescue of kidnapped victims, recovery of stolen property and arrest of criminal suspects.
Speaking at the event, CP Morris said the initiative marked a new chapter in strengthening collaboration between the police and the public.
“Today, we set out to appreciate individuals who have stood by the Police Command in one way or the other through their selfless services to the people of Adamawa State in ensuring a peaceful environment. This is the first of its kind, and we are committed to appreciating more individuals on a monthly basis to encourage community policing and collaboration with the police,” he said.
He noted that the Command had also used the occasion to reflect on its operational journey in recent years.
“We appreciate stakeholders, vigilante groups and individuals who have helped us to rescue kidnapped victims, recover properties and vehicles, and arrest suspects. Their partnership has been invaluable,” he added.
Among those recognised was the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, who expressed gratitude for the honour and reaffirmed his commitment to public engagement.
“I am grateful to God and the Police Command for this recognition. I remain committed to ensuring the safety of the people of Adamawa State. In my role as Public Relations Officer, I will continue to disseminate vital information needed to promote peace across all local communities and strengthen strategic partnerships with stakeholders, journalists and members of the public,” he said.
Nguroje urged residents to remain vigilant and proactive in supporting security agencies.
“It is our duty to provide full security to the state, and we will do what is expected of us without delay. Whenever members of the public see or hear anything that threatens public safety, they should reach out to us without hesitation, and we will respond immediately,” he assured.
The Award and Commendation Day, police authorities said, will now form part of the Command’s strategy to motivate personnel and deepen community trust in the fight against crime.
