The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari, has urged African nations to focus on creating bankable energy ventures that can attract needed investment and support a sustainable energy future.

Ojulari made the appeal on Monday during the opening of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council’s 2025 Annual International Conference and Exhibition in Lagos.

According to him, Africa must not only compete for international capital but must also present compelling, investment-ready energy projects. He emphasized the need for cooperation among governments and industry players to build a sector that draws in sustainable financing.

“The energy transition isn’t just about resources it’s about people. We need bold leadership that ensures no one is left behind,” said Ojulari, who also serves on the SPE Nigerian Council board.

This year’s event, themed ‘Building A Sustainable Energy Future: Leveraging Technology, Supply Chain, Human Resources and Policy’, focuses on innovative approaches to solving Africa’s energy challenges.

Ojulari stressed the importance of natural gas as a critical transitional fuel for Africa, saying hydrocarbons and gas must coexist. He called for constructive dialogue across sectors, more STEM education, youth empowerment, capital mobilisation, and stronger regional partnerships.

“Let’s lead the continent’s energy story with our people at the heart. We must address both today’s energy needs and prepare for tomorrow’s demands,” he said.

Earlier, Amina Danmadami, Chair of the SPE Nigeria Council and its first female leader, emphasized the need for collaborative solutions built around technology, supply chain efficiency, and strong policy frameworks.
