The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has renewed its call for Nigerians to treat the naira with respect, describing it as one of the most secure currencies in the world against counterfeiting. The message was delivered during the CBN Fair held in Lagos, where stakeholders gathered to explore alternative payment channels and deepen financial inclusion.
Paul Onuoha of the CBN’s Currency Operations Department led an interactive session, showing participants how to identify counterfeit notes and understand the security features embedded in the naira. He stressed that Nigeria’s currency ranks among the strongest globally in terms of security technology and demonstrated practical ways to detect fake notes.
Acting Director of Corporate Communications Hakama Sidi-Ali urged Nigerians to preserve the dignity of the naira by avoiding practices such as spraying, hawking, mutilating, or counterfeiting banknotes. She reiterated that under Governor Olayemi Cardoso, the CBN remains focused on stimulating productivity, expanding financial access, and ensuring price stability.
Lagos Branch Controller Sunday Daibo described the fair as more than an exhibition, calling it a platform to launch initiatives that will extend the benefits of alternative payment systems nationwide.
Other speakers, including Ayodeji Ojo from the Other Financial Institutions Supervision Department, discussed the CBN’s role in safeguarding savings, improving credit access, and maintaining trust in licensed financial institutions.
The event featured discussions on open banking, innovations in payment systems, and the economic importance of a strong naira in attracting investment. With Onuoha’s expert-led session anchoring the message, the CBN reaffirmed its stance that the naira is not only a means of exchange but also a symbol of national pride.
