The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has condemned what it described as the “humiliation and public disgrace” of teachers by the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Raheem Adaramaja, during an inspection visit to Government Day Secondary School, Amule.
In a statement issued on Tuesday night by its Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, the opposition party expressed outrage over reports that Adaramaja allegedly ordered teachers, including the Vice Principal, to sweep the school compound in front of their students.
Eyewitnesses reportedly claimed that the SUBEB boss, said to be acting on the instruction of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, accused the teachers of keeping an untidy environment and ordered them to pick up litter despite their explanations that students had just returned from break.
The PDP described the act as “a severe abuse of office and public degradation” of professionals already working under difficult conditions. It also accused Adaramaja of “arrogance, insensitivity, and moral bankruptcy,” saying the incident reflects a growing culture of oppression in the AbdulRazaq administration.
The party called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers to defend its members and demanded an unreserved apology from Adaramaja to the affected teachers and the entire education community. It also urged Governor AbdulRazaq to publicly condemn the act and impose disciplinary action if he was unaware of it.
Meanwhile, Prof. Adaramaja, in a response on Wednesday, dismissed the allegations as “falsehood and political propaganda.” He said his intention was to promote cleanliness and discipline, not to humiliate teachers.
“Cleanliness and orderliness are part of a conducive learning environment. What happened at GDSS Amule was a simple reminder that teachers must lead by example, not an act of humiliation,” Adaramaja said.
The SUBEB chairman reaffirmed his commitment to discipline, accountability, and excellence in Kwara’s education system, stressing that his actions were guided by responsibility and service.
