Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has been named the 2024 African Business Icon of the Year by Champion Newspapers.
The announcement came during the Champion Newspapers Annual Awards held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.
Tunde Oladipo, Group Branding Lead at Dangote Industries, received the award on Dangote’s behalf.
He described the honor as a reflection of Dangote’s legacy and dedication to Africa’s economic growth.
Dangote leads Dangote Group, West Africa’s largest conglomerate.
The billionaire was also named “Man of the Year” and “Global Business Icon” for his decades-long work in industry and philanthropy.
His foundation, Aliko Dangote Foundation, received a $1.25 billion endowment in 2014 and has supported health, education, and economic empowerment projects.
The event honored 41 individuals and organizations for their impact on Nigeria’s development.
Other awardees included Zenith Bank (Bank of the Year), Oliver Alawuba of UBA (Banker of the Year), and Olufemi Soneye of NNPC (Media Manager of the Year).
Champion Newspapers said selections were based on integrity, excellence, and service to the nation.
Dr. Nwadiuto Iheakanwa, Group Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, said the awards recognised those improving governance and economic growth.
She stressed the need to strengthen Nigeria’s manufacturing sector and boost agriculture.
Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Deputy Governor of Lagos, was named Most Outstanding Deputy Governor of the Year. He was represented by Olumide Sogunle.
Leo Stan Ekeh, founder of Zinox Technologies, chaired the event. He praised the organizers and reaffirmed Zinox’s role in advancing Nigeria’s digital economy.
The ceremony celebrated leaders from various sectors, including entertainment, finance, energy, and grassroots governance.
