A Nigerian military air strike has killed at least 20 people in Zamfara State, northwest Nigeria. The attack, which happened over the weekend, has sparked outrage and demands for an investigation.
The military said the strike targeted armed groups, known locally as “bandits.” Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame stated that intelligence showed terrorists were gathering to attack nearby villages.
He added that the group had already killed farmers and abducted civilians, including women and children. Two vigilantes were also killed, and two others injured in the crossfire, according to Ejodame.
However, local residents told AFP that a group of vigilantes pursuing the attackers was mistakenly bombed. The vigilantes were trying to rescue people and recover stolen cattle.
“We were hit by double tragedy,” said Buhari Dangulbi, a resident. “First, the bandits raided our villages. Then, the military jet killed 20 of those who tried to fight back.”
The villages of Mani and Wabi in Maru district were reportedly attacked by bandits. Cattle were stolen and several villagers abducted.
In response, local vigilantes chased the attackers. But when the military jet arrived, it opened fire, killing many of them.
“The military aircraft started shooting and killed at least 20 of our people,” said Abdullahi Ali, a local hunter and militia member.
An unknown number of others were injured. Human rights groups are calling for an independent investigation into the incident to ensure accountability and prevent future errors.
