Event blends sports with civic awareness, highlighting youth resilience and democratic participation

As Nigeria marked its 65th Independence anniversary, the youth wing of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chose a different approach to commemoration, organising a symbolic mountain climbing competition in Kagoro, Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The event, which drew over 100 young people from within and outside the state, was not only about physical endurance but also about political engagement. Participants were sensitised on the importance of voter registration and the power of the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future.

Speaking at the gathering, ADC National Youth Leader, Balarabe Rufa’i, said the choice of mountain climbing reflected both the physical and metaphorical struggles young Nigerians continue to face. “At 65, our nation’s journey is far from over. But the youth will not surrender. We are climbing towards history, and with peace, unity, and courage, we can rewrite the story of this country,” he said.

The programme was hosted with the support of Hon. Ibrahim Akuk, a former chairman of Kaura LGA, and received wide reception from the people of Southern Kaduna. According to Rufa’i, the initiative was intended to go beyond the usual Independence Day speeches and demonstrate “action, belief, and resilience” among Nigerian youth.

He emphasised that the youth wing of the ADC would continue to champion creative ways of mobilising young people, not only for sports and civic activities but also for political participation ahead of future elections.

Observers noted that the event underscored both the frustrations and the determination of Nigeria’s younger generation, who remain central to calls for national renewal.
