The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its unity and resolve to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections, despite facing internal rifts and a recent wave of defections.

At its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, party leaders, governors, and delegates pledged not to be distracted by current setbacks, warning that attempts by the Tinubu-led government to turn Nigeria into a one-party state would be resisted.

Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, read the party’s communiqué, which condemned worsening insecurity and economic decline, and urged President Tinubu to prioritise national interest over partisan gains.

The PDP also decried what it called open intimidation of opposition figures, reaffirming its faith in democracy and multi-party politics.

Despite a faltering reconciliation effort led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki—compounded by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s withdrawal—governors under the PDP banner vowed to remain committed to governance and party loyalty.

Bauchi State Governor and PDP Governors’ Forum chair, Bala Mohammed, praised members’ resilience and insisted the party remains “steadfast and united” even amid defections and political pressure.

“This NEC meeting is a victory for democracy,” Mohammed said, adding that the party’s continued consultations across states signal its relevance and refusal to back down.

The NEC also noted ongoing deliberations concerning the position of the National Secretary, with further discussion scheduled for the next meeting on June 30.

The governors concluded by affirming their commitment to enduring criticism and hardship for the sake of democratic progress.
