By Atoyebi Nike Former Anambra State governor and presidential hopeful Peter Obi has confirmed that he will contest the 2027 presidential election. Obi made the announcement during an interactive session on X (formerly Twitter) hosted by @obidientupdate, ending months of speculation about his political future. The X Space drew thousands of listeners, reflecting Obi’s continued relevance in Nigeria’s political space ahead of the next general election. Speaking during the session, Obi addressed key national challenges, including the economy, security and governance. “Peter Obi will be on the ballot in 2027. I need your prayers. I need your support,” he said. He firmly ruled out any vice-presidential ambition. “I am not travelling round the world to learn governance to be vice president,” Obi stated. On economic policy, the former Labour Party presidential candidate criticized the federal government’s heavy reliance on taxation without expanding productivity. “You cannot tax poverty,” he said. “Economic recovery must come from production, investment and job creation.” Obi also called for unity within the Obidient movement, urging young Nigerians to remain focused and organized. He described youths as central to building a “just, productive and united Nigeria.” The session recorded strong engagement from supporters, many of whom praised Obi’s policy-driven responses. However, some critics dismissed his long explanations as unfocused, describing them as excessive and repetitive. Despite the criticism, the declaration positions Obi firmly in the race as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of 2027.
