Security has been significantly heightened in Daura and other parts of Katsina State ahead of the return and burial of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a London hospital at the age of 82.
In line with Islamic tradition, Buhari’s remains will be buried in his hometown of Daura. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, to accompany the late president’s body back to Nigeria.
Security operatives have since been deployed across key locations in Katsina State. Strategic checkpoints were mounted at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua International Airport, Daura Road Roundabout, and the Kayauki–Daura highway. Our correspondent counted at least 11 checkpoints between Kayauki and Daura, highlighting the level of vigilance.
At Buhari’s residence in Daura, a modest crowd of mourners gathered, while security personnel kept watch. Armed forces were also visible around the Emir of Daura’s palace, maintaining a calm but tight security presence.
The state government declared a public holiday in honour of the former president, though the announcement came as a surprise to many. Some students and civil servants were seen returning home after arriving at schools and offices unaware of the directive.
The passing of the former president has cast a somber mood over the town. Many residents, including longtime neighbours, shared fond memories of Buhari’s humility, generosity, and principled life.
“He was a leader who never allowed power to change him,” said Alhaji Lawal Nalado, a close neighbour. “Even at the peak of his career, he lived modestly, upheld prayers, and always had time for people.”
Nalado recalled Buhari’s consistent acts of generosity, especially during festive periods when he provided food items, money, and livestock to the needy. He added that the late president was known for treating everyone with fairness and respect.
Another neighbor, Alhaji Hamisu Ibrahim, praised Buhari’s devotion to Islam and youth development. “He always encouraged young people to be honest, disciplined, and focused on education,” Ibrahim said.
Residents believe Buhari’s legacy rooted in honesty, simplicity, and patriotism will live on. Many expressed hope that his values would inspire future generations of Nigerian leaders.
