Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara has declared his support for the campaign demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a letter dated October 13 and addressed to activist Omoyele Sowore, Wabara said he fully supports the planned protest calling for Kanu’s freedom. The letter, shared by Sowore on X, stated that Wabara is currently abroad on a medical trip and would have joined the demonstration if he were in the country.

He praised Sowore and other organisers of the October 20 march for their courage in standing up against injustice. “Please know that I am with you in spirit and in full support of every peaceful effort aimed at securing justice and national reconciliation. I wish you and all participants a peaceful and successful outing,” he wrote.

Sowore has called on South-East governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers and religious leaders to join the campaign. He said he had reached out to key figures including Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since 2021 following his extradition from Kenya. Despite several court orders, including an October 2022 Court of Appeal judgment discharging and acquitting him, the Federal Government has refused to release him. He faces terrorism and treason-related charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja, which he has repeatedly denied.
