The Yobe State Government has unveiled a major tree-planting campaign to fight desertification and restore degraded environments across the state.

Governor Mai Mala Buni announced on Friday in Damaturu that a statewide environmental committee has been established to oversee the project, which will distribute and plant two million tree seedlings during its first phase.

Under the initiative, each of the 17 local government areas will receive at least 3,000 seedlings, with additional trees made available for household planting. The governor noted that the programme is designed to take advantage of the August planting season.

Deputy Governor Idi Barde Gubana will chair the committee, which is expected to commence activities within a week. Sub-committees will also be created to manage site selection, land preparation, ploughing, seedling treatment, and the distribution of an initial 50,000 seedlings already secured for the campaign.

According to the governor, the exercise will officially kick off in Damaturu on August 27, 2025, before expanding to all local governments on August 29, 2025.

Governor Buni stressed that the initiative reflects his administration’s strong commitment to tackling environmental hazards and promoting sustainable development across the state.
