The Propcom+ project, a UK-Aid funded agricultural initiative, has renewed its pledge to break the cycle of hunger and malnutrition in Nigeria through climate-smart and nutrition-focused farming innovations.
The reaffirmation came during the Nutritious Food Fair held in Kano on Monday to commemorate World Food Day 2025, bringing together stakeholders in agriculture, nutrition, and food systems.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Adiya Ode, Country Representative and Political Director of Propcom+, said the project is driving agricultural transformation through sustainable, market-led solutions that empower smallholder farmers.
“We are driving transformation through market-driven and climate-smart solutions that empower smallholder farmers while promoting sustainability,” Dr. Ode stated.
She noted that Propcom+’s focus includes promoting nutrient-dense and climate-resilient crops such as Vitamin A maize, Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato, Iron Pearl Millet, Cowpea, and Groundnuts crops designed to combat micronutrient deficiencies while adapting to changing weather conditions.
According to Dr. Ode, partnerships with the Kano State Government and HarvestPlus have strengthened the entire “seed-to-shelf” value chain, improving farmer incomes, enhancing food availability, and ensuring that local markets thrive.
Echoing her remarks, Dr. Yusuf Dollah Fuad, Country Manager of HarvestPlus, highlighted the role of rural farmers in advancing nutrition outcomes.
“Most rural communities consume what they produce on their farms. By cultivating nutrient-enriched staple crops, farmers can directly provide essential vitamins and micronutrients to their families,” Dr. Fuad explained.
The Propcom+ initiative reflects a broader shift in Nigeria’s agricultural strategy one that integrates nutrition, productivity, and resilience. By equipping farmers with improved crop varieties and access to sustainable markets, the project aims to build a stronger foundation for food security and public health across the country.
