President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Japan’s newly elected Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, the first woman to hold the position, describing her emergence as a remarkable testament to her decades-long contributions to governance and political leadership in Japan.

In a statement released on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said Takaichi’s election following her victory in Japan’s parliamentary vote underscores the trust and confidence reposed in her by the Japanese people.

In a personally signed letter addressed to Prime Minister Takaichi, Tinubu said her rise as both leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and head of government marks a significant moment in Japan’s democratic history.

“Your victory as the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party and ultimately as the Prime Minister of Japan constitutes a remarkable expression of the confidence reposed in you by the good people of Japan,” the President stated.

He lauded Takaichi’s “tremendous contributions” to Japan’s political and economic progress, adding that her leadership would further inspire women across the world to break new ground in public service.

The Nigerian leader reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to sustaining its “deep, productive, and strategic relationship” with Japan, noting that both nations have built enduring partnerships in trade, infrastructure, and technology.

“As you assume this mandate, you can rest assured of Nigeria’s continued goodwill and support for Japan,” Tinubu said, expressing optimism that bilateral cooperation will deepen under her “capable and visionary leadership.”

The President also expressed his desire to meet with Prime Minister Takaichi soon to discuss opportunities for collaboration, particularly in energy transition, education, and innovation.
