AfDB Approves $6 Million Grant to Strengthen Africa’s Disaster Preparedness
Grant to support African Risk Capacity in proactive disaster management and risk financing

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $6 million grant to the African Risk Capacity (ARC) to enhance disaster preparedness and risk financing across the continent for the 2025-2026 period.

Approved on October 29, 2025, under the Bank’s African Disaster Risk Financing Initiative (ADRiFi), the funding will enable ARC to strengthen national capacities in disaster risk assessment, early warning systems, and contingency planning across member countries.

According to the AfDB, the project seeks to help African governments shift from reactive disaster response to proactive preparedness, improving their ability to allocate resources efficiently and respond swiftly to emergencies such as droughts, floods, tropical cyclones, and epidemics.

The initiative will also support the expansion of ARC’s sovereign insurance risk pool, encourage more countries to ratify the ARC Treaty, and facilitate insurance premium support for vulnerable states.

Beneficiaries will include policymakers, technical experts, and civil servants, who will receive training in risk quantification, financing mechanisms, and women’s inclusion in disaster management.

The AfDB said the partnership aligns with its broader goal of building climate resilience and sustainable risk management systems across Africa.
