Nigeria’s Super Eagles have booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a commanding 2-0 victory over Algeria in a high-stakes quarter-final clash on Saturday.

From the first whistle, the Eagles imposed their rhythm, combining intensity, tactical discipline, and relentless energy that left the Algerians struggling to respond.

The breakthrough came just after the break in the 47th minute, when Victor Osimhen soared above the Algerian defence to connect with a perfectly timed cross from Bruno Onyemaechi, giving Nigeria a crucial lead. Ten minutes later, Akor Adams doubled the advantage, calmly dribbling past Algeria’s goalkeeper after an exquisite assist from Osimhen, sending the Nigerian fans into jubilation.

Adams nearly added a second of his own when his header rattled the woodwork, but the Super Eagles’ defence held firm throughout. Algeria attempted to mount a comeback but were repeatedly stifled by Nigeria’s pace, pressure, and strategic discipline.

Several players stood out in Nigeria’s performance. Right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel was electric both in attack and defence, while Victor Osimhen showcased his lethal finishing and vision with a goal and an assist. Calvin Bassey marshalled the defence with composure, shutting down Algerian threats, and Alex Iwobi orchestrated the midfield, breaking lines with precise passes and intelligent movement. Frank Onyeka and Wilfred Ndidi dominated the centre of the park, intercepting passes and disrupting Algeria’s rhythm, while Bruno Onyemaechi contributed with a composed display and a crucial assist.

The Super Eagles’ all-round brilliance, combining skill, teamwork, and determination, ensures they are now one of the last four teams in the tournament. Their semi-final showdown with Morocco promises to be a tantalizing encounter for football fans across the continent.
