Goodluck Akinlawon, a student of the University of Ibadan, has emerged the overall winner of the 2025 Amnesty International Nigeria Inter-Varsity Debate, held in Abuja.
Akinlawon secured first place in the final round, outperforming participants from 15 other universities across Nigeria. Odebala Odemena of Baze University, Abuja, finished as first runner-up, while Alexander Boroh of the University of Benin placed third.
Themed “Empowering Voices, Inspiring Change,” this year’s edition brought together students from all six geopolitical zones, fostering critical discussion on human rights and social justice. It marked the third iteration of the annual debate competition organized by Amnesty International Nigeria.
In a statement on Friday, Isa Sanusi, Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, commended the high level of engagement and advocacy demonstrated by all participants. He noted the event’s growing significance as a platform for youth-driven discourse on justice, human dignity, and accountability.
“This debate continues to grow in impact and reach each year,” Sanusi said. “Ending the culture of silence begins with the youth understanding they have a right to speak — and to be heard.”
He emphasized that public speaking and advocacy are crucial in challenging oppressive systems and fostering a more just society.
The competition featured structured debating rounds in which students tackled key human rights issues, championed social justice, and questioned entrenched norms.
Participating institutions included: Landmark University, University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan, University of Port Harcourt, University of Benin, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Usman Dan Fodio University Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Modibbo Adama University of Technology Yola, Gombe State University, University of Maiduguri, Baze University, and Benue State University Makurdi.
The debate continues to serve as a springboard for young voices committed to championing human rights and catalyzing societal change.
