Liverpool forward and Portuguese international Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Spain, local authorities confirmed early Wednesday. The 28-year-old footballer was travelling with his brother, Andre Silva, who also died at the scene.
The accident occurred near Valladolid in northern Spain, where police say the vehicle Jota was driving veered off the road due to a tyre blowout while attempting to overtake another car. The vehicle reportedly struck a roadside barrier before overturning.
Jota’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through the global football community. Only weeks ago, he married his long-time partner. The couple shared three young children.
A central figure in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign last season, Jota was praised not just for his clinical finishing but also his selflessness and work ethic on and off the pitch. Since joining the club from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, he had become a fan favorite at Anfield.
The Portugal national team issued a heartfelt statement mourning his passing.
“Diogo Jota was not only a fantastic player, but an extraordinary person who was respected by all his teammates and opponents,” the statement read. “His passion, humility, and commitment to the game left a mark on everyone who knew him.”
Liverpool FC is yet to issue a formal statement, but tributes from current and former players, fans, and football clubs around the world have flooded social media.
Jota earned over 40 caps for Portugal and scored key goals in their UEFA Nations League and World Cup qualification campaigns. He was expected to play a major role in the national team’s future tournaments.
Authorities in Spain say a full investigation into the crash is underway, but initial reports confirm no foul play is suspected.
Jota’s death is being mourned as both a sporting loss and a personal tragedy, a brilliant career and young family cut short in a moment of devastation.
