Nigeria’s drive to lead in energy innovation gained a boost on Wednesday as the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) entered into a strategic partnership to advance research, innovation, and human capital in both petroleum and renewable energy sectors.

The Memorandum of Understanding, signed at PTDF’s headquarters in Abuja, formalizes collaboration between PTDF and NNPCL’s Research, Technology and Innovation subsidiary, with a focus on emerging technologies, sustainable energy solutions, and energy security.

PTDF Executive Secretary Galadima Aminu described the agreement as a “bold step towards national progress,” emphasizing its potential to bridge academia, industry, and government. He said the partnership would support joint research in sustainable oil and gas operations, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and advanced drilling, as well as promote human capital development through specialized training and innovation programmes.

Highlighting the focus on local expertise, Aminu stressed that Nigerian talent, materials, and technologies would take centre stage. He revealed that both institutions would pool their research facilities to accelerate testing and deployment of breakthrough technologies such as refinery catalysts, biofuels, and geological mapping.

On funding, Aminu confirmed that the parties would adopt sustainable financing models to ensure projects remain impactful. He noted that the MoU builds on past collaborations, including the NNPCL Learning Academy at the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna.

NNPCL’s Executive Vice President, Business Services, Sophia Mbakwe, welcomed the pact as “strategic and timely,” saying it would enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global energy market while advancing local content and technology adoption.

Both PTDF and NNPCL pledged to align their efforts with Nigeria’s energy transition targets and global climate commitments. “This partnership represents a bold step towards a cleaner, smarter, and more inclusive energy future for Nigeria,” Aminu said.
