The Children’s Parliament in Katsina State has urged the government to domesticate the National Policy for Violence-Free Schools, Safety, and Security, in order to make schools safer for children across the state.
The 34-member parliament made the call on Monday during its plenary session at the Katsina State House of Assembly chamber, presided over by Speaker Fadila Sani.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Halimatu Idris, representing Malumfashi, who stressed that implementing the policy locally was vital to ensuring secure, supportive learning environments.
“Without safety in schools, education and future development remain at risk,” Idris said, highlighting the impact of violence on children’s well-being and academic performance. She urged the executive arm to adapt the national framework into a workable state-level plan that prioritises the safety of pupils and teachers.
Similarly, Asiya Rabe, representing Maiadua, called for the government to accelerate the implementation of child protection, disability rights, and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) laws. She noted that enforcing these laws would safeguard vulnerable groups, particularly children, women, and persons with disabilities.
In another motion, Asiya Ridwan of Dutsi constituency urged the government to act swiftly on the effects of climate change. She proposed the creation of an anticipatory action plan to help communities already bearing its impact.
After deliberations, the parliament adopted the motions and appealed to the government to take concrete steps. The session was supported by Save the Children International (SCI), under the Education Cannot Wait-funded project.
