Communities and climate justice groups across Africa have begun a coordinated campaign demanding that TotalEnergies halt its fossil fuel operations on the continent, pay reparations, and support a just energy transition.

The mobilisation, known as the “Africa Week of Action to Kick Total Out of Africa”, runs from Monday, August 18, to Sunday, August 24, 2025, spanning at least 10 African countries, including Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Senegal, Benin, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Togo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Online events are also taking place globally.

The campaign is being spearheaded by communities directly affected by the oil giant’s projects, in collaboration with movements such as StopEACOP, Climate Justice Coalition, Laudato Si Movement Africa, Justiça Ambiental, and several grassroots youth networks.

Organisers accuse TotalEnergies of destroying ecosystems, displacing local populations, and worsening poverty through its oil and gas ventures. They are calling on African governments to revoke the company’s licenses, reclaim resources, and invest in community-driven renewable energy.

Planned actions for the week include protests in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and parts of Tanzania; a community tribunal in Hoima, Uganda; symbolic football matches in Senegal and Togo; alongside art, prayer vigils, webinars, and digital campaigns.
