The Federal Government on Monday unveiled a new digital portal designed to simplify teachers’ registration, certification, and professional development, as part of reforms to reposition Nigeria’s education sector.

Speaking at the launch of the platform and the Strategic Vision for Nigerian Teachers in Abuja, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa said the initiative, developed by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), would provide a one-stop system for licensing, renewal, examination scheduling, and professional tracking.

“It will also serve as a national database for teacher performance and career progression,” Alausa said. He added that the reforms extend beyond digitalisation to a wider strategy anchored on professionalisation, accountability, equity, and global alignment.

The government will also roll out a Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification Framework, which the minister described as “protective, not punitive,” to safeguard children and ensure classroom integrity. Private schools will be required to verify TRCN registration and clearance for all teachers.

TRCN Registrar Dr. Ronke Soyombo said the portal, part of her 100-day action plan, would allow teachers to register, access results, and print certificates from home. She also revealed that the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) has been streamlined to five core subjects foundational maths, literacy, digital literacy, safeguarding, and pedagogy. An AI-powered lesson plan generator will also launch in October.

Dr. Patrick Adeleye, CEO of TeckPlus Digital Solutions, which built the system, said the portal would end decades of poor teacher data management and provide accurate national figures for education planning.

The launch drew support from development partners, including the British Council and the British High Commission, who hailed the platform as a milestone for education reform. Presidential aide Mohammed Isa urged integration of accessibility tools such as screen readers and digital braille to ensure inclusivity under the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
