Netflix has taken a major hit after a mass boycott led by Elon Musk triggered a wave of subscription cancellations and a sharp 31% drop in its share price, now trading at about $1,167.

The backlash erupted on X (formerly Twitter) after Musk posted, “Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids,” while confirming he had cancelled his own account. The criticism centered on Dead End: Paranormal Park, an animated series featuring a transgender main character, whose creator, Hamish Steele, previously made controversial remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Within hours, #CancelNetflix became a top trend on X, with users largely conservative voices posting proof of their cancellations and accusing the platform of pushing a “woke agenda” in children’s programming. Supporters of the show fired back, calling the boycott transphobic and warning against erasing LGBTQ+ stories. Steele himself described the backlash as “lies” and said he has received hateful messages since the controversy broke.

The uproar marks the latest flashpoint in Musk’s long-running feud with Netflix, dating back to 2022 when he blamed the streamer’s subscriber losses on the “woke mind virus.” The current dispute highlights how cultural battles around gender and identity are increasingly shaping business risks for major entertainment companies.

While analysts say Netflix is not facing collapse, the platform now confronts a delicate balancing act: retaining a diverse global audience while navigating polarised cultural and political pressures in the U.S.
