Super Falcons forward and six-time CAF Women’s Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, has refuted claims that she has retired from international football, following viral misinformation from a fake Facebook account impersonating her.

The rumour, which spread rapidly on social media on Monday evening, suggested that the former Barcelona striker had called time on her career with Nigeria’s national team. However, it has now been confirmed that the post originated from an impersonator and not her official handles.

In response, Oshoala took to Instagram to subtly dismiss the claim in her usual humorous style. She shared a meme showing a man grappling with a bull, captioned: “The day I catch that journalist… ogun kill am,” indirectly mocking those behind the false report.

While she has not issued an official statement or media interview, the post reassured fans and stakeholders that she remains with the national team at least through the current campaign.

Oshoala is currently part of the Super Falcons squad set to take on South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the semifinals of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The fixture is billed for Tuesday evening at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.

The encounter is a rematch of the 2022 WAFCON semifinal, where South Africa defeated Nigeria en route to winning the title. Both sides have maintained strong performances in this year’s edition, making today’s clash highly anticipated.

Oshoala played a crucial role in Nigeria’s quarterfinal victory over Zambia and is expected to lead the charge again as the Super Falcons aim for a record-extending WAFCON title.
