Stakeholders in Bauchi South Senatorial District have urged the National Assembly to assign formal constitutional responsibilities to traditional rulers, approve the creation of new local government areas, and consider the formation of a new state from the current Bauchi territory as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.
These appeals were made during a one-day town hall meeting convened by Senator Shehu Buba Umar in partnership with the Bauchi South Zonal Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The forum was part of a broader effort to engage communities in the review of the 1999 Constitution and gather regional input for the North-East public hearing scheduled to take place in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Participants at the summit included community leaders, traditional authorities, representatives of civil society groups, legal professionals, youth and women advocates, traders’ associations, union members, and political figures.
Hon. Abdulmumini Mohammed Kundak, who chairs the APC’s Zonal Constitution Review Committee, said the objective was to develop a unified submission that reflects the region’s diverse perspectives and developmental priorities.
To ensure effective coordination, a committee was inaugurated to compile, vet, and harmonize memoranda from across the district. The team is expected to streamline proposals, avoid overlaps, and present a well-aligned position at the zonal level.
Barrister Ibrahim Yakubu Umar, named head of the committee, assured stakeholders of an open and speedy process. He promised that community views would be fairly represented and that the committee would work swiftly to deliver its report.
