As the world commemorates International Women’s Day 2026, the Country Chair of the G100 Mission Million SDG Wing Nigeria, Amb. Dr. Tracey Chizoba Fletcher, has called for concrete action to advance gender equality, urging governments, institutions, and individuals to move beyond rhetoric and deliver meaningful change for women and girls.

In a statement marking the global observance on March 8, Fletcher said this year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” highlights the need for deliberate investment in women’s empowerment as a pathway to stronger economies, better governance, and safer societies.

“International Women’s Day is not only a day of celebration; it is a moment of accountability,” she said, noting that the global community must reflect on progress made toward gender equality while recommitting to the work that remains.

According to her, the theme underscores a simple but powerful reality: when women and girls are given access to opportunities, societies reap significant benefits.

“When we give girls access to education, we gain stronger economies. When we give women equal opportunities in leadership, we gain better governance. And when we give women justice and protection, we gain safer and more inclusive societies,” Fletcher stated.

She emphasized that empowering women is not merely a moral obligation but a strategic investment in sustainable development.

Despite decades of advocacy and policy commitments, Fletcher noted that many women and girls across the world still struggle to access basic rights, justice, and opportunities.

“Women and girls all over the world deserve to have their rights respected. They deserve access to justice. They are calling for action,” she said. “Talk is cheap. Let actions speak.”

Fletcher stressed that the annual commemoration must go beyond symbolic gestures and serve as a platform for tangible commitments.

She urged governments to strengthen policies that protect women and girls, while calling on institutions to create inclusive environments where women can lead and thrive. She also challenged businesses to invest more in women’s economic empowerment and encouraged society to confront the systemic barriers that continue to limit women’s potential.

At the heart of these efforts, she said, is the recognition that gender equality is closely linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and that meaningful progress toward these global targets cannot be achieved without the active participation and leadership of women.

“Women are not just beneficiaries of development; they are drivers of development,” Fletcher said.

She added that the G100 Mission Million SDG Wing Nigeria remains committed to advancing empowerment initiatives, collaboration, and sustainable development opportunities for women and girls across the country.

Fletcher concluded by urging stakeholders to transform commitments into measurable outcomes.

“The future we want cannot be built by half of society alone,” she said. “When we give women the respect they deserve, when we give girls the opportunities they need, and when we give women a seat at every table, we all gain.”

“Talk is cheap,” she reiterated. “Let actions speak.”
