Former President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, has called on Nigeria’s political and economic elites to assume a greater leadership role in unifying West Africa and driving the continent’s economic integration. His remarks came during a keynote address at the launch of A Journey in Service, the autobiography of Nigeria’s former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), in Abuja.

Akufo-Addo emphasized Nigeria’s pivotal role in Africa’s progress, stating that despite the country’s internal challenges, its leadership remains indispensable to the continent’s economic and political transformation. He reiterated that Ghana stands as a steadfast ally, committed to advancing regional and continental development alongside Nigeria.

The former Ghanaian leader’s speech underscores the growing calls for stronger regional cooperation, particularly in trade and economic policies, as West Africa navigates evolving global economic landscapes. His appeal also resonates with the broader push for African nations to leverage collective strengths to foster sustainable development and geopolitical stability.

With Nigeria’s vast economic potential and influence, Akufo-Addo’s remarks reinforce the urgent need for the nation’s elites to spearhead efforts in enhancing the African Union’s vision of a prosperous, integrated, and globally competitive continent.

Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy, plays a crucial role in shaping the region’s economic and political direction. The country has been instrumental in regional peacekeeping, economic initiatives, and trade agreements, including its participation in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). However, internal governance challenges, security concerns, and economic fluctuations have sometimes hampered its ability to fully exert its leadership role.

Akufo-Addo’s message serves as both an encouragement and a challenge to Nigeria’s decision-makers, urging them to take bold steps in fostering deeper integration within West Africa and beyond. His remarks align with a long-standing belief that Africa’s development hinges on stronger collaboration among its most influential nations.

Historically, Ghana and Nigeria have maintained close diplomatic and economic ties, with both nations playing crucial roles in shaping West Africa’s economic policies and security frameworks. The reaffirmation of Ghana’s commitment to working with Nigeria reflects a shared vision for regional prosperity and unity.

As Africa continues to navigate shifting global economic trends, calls for stronger leadership from Nigeria will likely shape future policies on trade, investment, and political stability in the region. The challenge now remains for Nigeria’s elites to respond decisively and take up the mantle of leadership in actualizing Africa’s economic transformation.
