Gombe State has emerged as one of Nigeria’s leading reformist states, ranking fourth nationwide with a score of 80.6% in the latest Digital Maturity in Tax Administration Index, a national evaluation of the digital capacity of all 36 states and the FCT.

The announcement was made during a high-level Validation Workshop on Digital Public Infrastructure and Revenue Intelligence Index Tools, hosted by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum in collaboration with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in Abuja on Wednesday.

The index assessed key indicators such as digital taxpayer onboarding, integration with national ID and payment systems, compliance automation, data security, and staff digital proficiency.

Also ranking in the top five were Bayelsa, Borno, Kano, and Delta States, all of which exceeded 80% in comprehensive review.

Representing Gombe at the workshop, Aisha Adamu, Executive Chairman of the Gombe State Internal Revenue Service (GIRS), attributed the achievement to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s commitment to digital governance and institutional reform.

“This recognition reflects His Excellency’s vision for innovation and excellence,” said Adamu. “It’s also a tribute to our taxpayers, who continue to support and comply.”

Since assuming office, Adamu has led a sweeping digital overhaul of Gombe’s tax system automating key processes, introducing user-friendly platforms, plugging leakages, and improving service delivery. These reforms have driven higher voluntary compliance and increased internally generated revenue.

She praised her team’s commitment and described the award as both a milestone and a motivation to continue building a more transparent, tech-driven tax system.

“This is not just a reward, it’s a call to deepen our commitment to innovation, accountability, and digital resilience,” she added.
