The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Anambra-Imo River Basin Development Authority (AIRBDA) have agreed to deepen their cooperation to confront the growing impact of climate change on river basin hydrology and water resource management.
At a strategic meeting held at NiMet headquarters in Abuja, Professor Charles Anosike, Director-General of NiMet, emphasized that shifting rainfall and temperature patterns are intensifying the risks of floods and droughts, threatening food production, infrastructure, and livelihoods across Nigeria.
“The linkage between climate and river basin systems is undeniable,” Anosike stated. “Weather patterns affect water flow and availability, while the landscape of river basins influences local climate behavior.”
He pointed to NiMet’s Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) tool as essential for forecasting extreme weather and guiding planning, particularly for flood preparedness.
On his part, Mr. Emeka Nduka, Managing Director of AIRBDA, commended NiMet’s critical role in supporting dam operations and irrigation strategies. He reaffirmed AIRBDA’s commitment to technical cooperation, especially amid increasing climate volatility.
The session concluded with both institutions agreeing to formalize their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The partnership will focus on sharing expertise, improving integrated water resource management, supporting agriculture, and boosting community resilience in the southeastern region.
The agreement marks a proactive step towards climate-smart governance and sustainable development as Nigeria grapples with the realities of a changing climate.
