The Northern region of Nigeria has historically been shaped by influential figures who left indelible marks on the country’s political landscape. From Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the nation’s first Prime Minister, to the Sardauna of Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello, and notable politicians like Kashim Ibrahim, the North has produced leaders who dominated national discourse. In recent times, President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration further solidified the region’s impact on Nigerian politics. Now, a new figure is emerging as a potential force: Abubakar Malami SAN.

As a founding father of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Malami has become a crucial figure in the party’s structure and dynamics. Rumors of his potential exit from the APC have already started to weaken the party’s grip in the North, sparking speculation about his next move. Given his stature and influence, Malami’s actions are likely to have significant repercussions on the party’s fortunes in the region. Whether he stays or leaves, one thing is certain: Abubakar Malami SAN is becoming the Northern Nexus, a pivotal figure around whom Northern politics may increasingly revolve.

Abubakar Malami, former Minister of Justice, is emerging as a potential successor to Buhari’s Northern appeal. With his sharp intellect and strategic acumen, Malami is positioning himself to inherit the mantle of leadership in the North. This development poses a significant challenge to President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, as Malami’s influence could galvanize regional support for his own ambitions.

Abubakar Malami played a pivotal role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), serving as a resource person to the Manifesto Drafting Sub-Committee during the party’s merger in 2013. As the National Legal Adviser of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Malami’s expertise and strategic thinking contributed significantly to the APC’s foundational framework. His involvement helped shape the party’s manifesto and laid the groundwork for its eventual success.

Malami’s experience and influence within the APC make him a potential successor to former President Muhammadu Buhari’s Northern appeal. With his sharp intellect and strategic acumen, Malami has demonstrated an ability to navigate complex political landscapes and build strong relationships. His capacity to bring people together and drive change could galvanize support in the North, positioning him as a formidable figure in Nigerian politics.

His potential to change things around lies in his ability to leverage his experience, expertise, and network to drive meaningful reforms. As a seasoned politician and lawyer, he understands the intricacies of governance and the needs of the Nigerian people. With his leadership, Malami could harness the APC’s strengths and capitalize on opportunities to drive progress, potentially redefining the party’s trajectory and cementing his own legacy.

I was deeply humbled when I met Abubakar Malami at his well-decorated chambers in Abuja, courtesy of my friend Abdulrahman Ibrahim Sahihi. What struck me most was his generosity and simplicity, traits that embody a true leader. Despite his prominence, Malami exuded humility, putting me at ease and making a lasting impression. His chambers, bustling with activity, reflected his commitment to youth empowerment and development, a quality that Nigeria sorely needs in its leaders.

Malami’s demeanor and character are a breath of fresh air in Nigerian politics. His intellectual prowess, coupled with humility and simplicity, make him an exemplary figure. Nigeria would undoubtedly benefit from a leader with Malami’s qualities, who prioritizes the nation’s development and the empowerment of its youth. His leadership would be a beacon of hope for a brighter future.

It is no surprise that Kebbians are rallying behind Abubakar Malami for Governor in 2027, and I believe his appeal extends far beyond Kebbi State. His noble personality and leadership qualities have garnered widespread admiration, making it feasible and realistic for him to make a positive impact in other parts of Nigeria. The idea of “Kebbi Sabuwa” (Greater Kebbi) could become a reality, with Malami’s influence and acceptance transcending regional boundaries.

If Malami were to exit the APC, a party he played a crucial role in building, it would likely send shockwaves through the political landscape. As a key founding member, his departure would be a significant loss, and many would be watching to see his next move. The fact that some original stakeholders have been sidelined while new faces have taken center stage with less impact in Northern Nigeria adds to the speculation surrounding Malami’s future plans.

The Malami effect is being felt strongly, with rumors of his potential exit from the APC leading the CPC bloc to regain relevance. This rumor alone has sent ripples through the political landscape, with many speculating about Malami’s next move. The anticipation surrounding his decision is palpable, and various stakeholders are likely reevaluating their positions in light of this potential development. Malami’s influence extends beyond his party affiliation, and his actions can have far-reaching implications.

Although Malami has not made a formal statement about his plans, the hint of a possible departure has sparked intense interest. His influence and reputation as a key figure in the APC’s formation make his potential exit a significant development that could reshape the party’s dynamics and beyond. The uncertainty surrounding his future plans has created a sense of expectation, with many awaiting his next move to see how it might impact the political landscape. As a seasoned politician, Malami’s decisions are closely watched, and any shift in his allegiance could have profound consequences.

Many may wonder why someone from a distant place like Bauchi would be drawn to Malami. The answer lies in the recognition of exceptional leadership and the future of the region. It’s about acknowledging and supporting outstanding individuals who can drive positive change, regardless of their geographical location.

The focus isn’t solely on the APC or any particular party but rather on the significant impact Malami can have wherever he goes. His weight and influence in Nigerian politics make him a valuable asset, and supporting him is about recognizing his potential to shape the future of the region and the country as a whole. It’s about embracing and empowering the best, and Malami’s stature makes him an attractive figure to rally behind.

Abubakar Malami’s effect is causing ripples within the APC, drawing comparisons to influential leaders like Nelson Mandela, known for his unifying presence, and Lee Kuan Yew, renowned for his transformative leadership. Like Mandela, Malami’s appeal transcends regional boundaries, while his strategic acumen echoes Yew’s pragmatic approach. Given his current Northern appeal, Malami’s influence could significantly alter the political landscape in Kebbi State and the North West.

As a prominent figure, Malami’s impact on Nigerian politics could be profound. His potential to galvanize support and drive change might redefine the APC’s trajectory and beyond. In Kebbi State, his influence could lead to a shift in power dynamics, while in the North West, it might reshape regional politics. Nationwide, Malami’s effect could contribute to a more dynamic and potentially more inclusive political environment, with his leadership style and vision playing a key role in shaping the country’s future.

Abubakar Malami SAN has emerged as the Northern Nexus due to his influential position as one of the founding fathers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his widespread appeal in the region. His reputation, strategic acumen, and ability to bridge gaps have earned him respect across party lines, making him a crucial figure in Northern politics.

Malami’s potential to shape the future of Northern politics is unparalleled. His actions, whether staying in the APC or exploring other options, will likely have significant repercussions on the region’s political landscape. As a key figure with a strong following, Malami’s decisions will influence the trajectory of the APC and other political parties in the North, cementing his position as a pivotal force in shaping the region’s political future.
