More than 110,000 Nigerians have received free eye treatment through the “Eye Can See” programme, an initiative of the Seplat Energy/NNPC Exploration and Production Limited Joint Venture, according to figures released at the conclusion of the programme’s 13th edition in Benin City, Edo State.

Speaking on behalf of the company, Chioma Afe, Director of External Affairs and Social Performance at Seplat Energy, disclosed the milestone on Thursday. She was represented by Esther, Senior Manager of Corporate Social Investment and Social Performance.

Afe said a total of 110,634 eye treatments have been carried out since the programme’s inception, along with the distribution of 55,382 reading glasses and 4,752 successful cataract surgeries.

“Every aspect of this programme is completely free of charge,” Afe stated. “We also provide consultations for other health concerns such as hypertension and diabetes, with medical professionals available on-site.”

Now in its 13th year, the three-day outreach continues to offer free eye consultations, surgeries, and education on related health issues to thousands in the host communities of the Joint Venture partners.

Government and Traditional Leaders Commend the Impact

Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, represented by the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Edward Aisowieren, praised the Seplat JV for a programme that has significantly improved quality of life for many.

“This initiative is truly living up to its name—Eye Can See,” he said. “Many of those who had surgery under the programme can now see clearly. That’s a profound achievement.”

Chief Raphael Oronsaye, the Obkhavbaye of Benin, who represented the Oba of Benin, also applauded the initiative, urging residents to make full use of such opportunities. He described the programme as a model for responsible corporate social responsibility in Nigeria.

Also present at the closing event were representatives from NNPC Exploration and Production Limited, led by Owunari Tomikeimieye, who encouraged host communities to protect oil and gas infrastructure that enables such social investments.

“It is from the resources of our operations that we’re able to give back to our communities in impactful ways like this,” Tomikeimieye said.

A beneficiary, Dennis Laure, spoke on behalf of the recipients, thanking Seplat JV for helping restore vision to many, thereby improving their livelihood and social participation.
