Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has expressed shock over the use of drones by Boko Haram terrorists to attack troops in Mafa Local Government Area, despite prior intelligence alerts.

Zulum, who visited the affected areas on Friday, described the incident as a “frightening development,” warning that the use of armed drones by insurgents poses a grave threat to national security.

“Honestly, we had credible intelligence that Mafa would be attacked, and it was duly circulated to all relevant authorities,” the governor said. “This is a serious gap that needs urgent attention from both state and federal security agencies.”

He called on the Federal Government to strengthen Nigeria’s borders and airspace defences, stressing that the proliferation of drones among non-state actors must be urgently curbed.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian military confirmed that troops of Operation Hadin Kai repelled multiple coordinated attacks in Mafa, Dikwa, Gajibo, and Katarko, killing more than 50 terrorists.

Zulum commiserated with victims and urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible intelligence to support the military’s counter-insurgency efforts.
