The Kano State Government has endorsed two major projects aimed at expanding infrastructure, stabilising power supply, and improving access to affordable housing across the state.
In a statement released on Sunday, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, revealed that the state intends to secure majority ownership in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company and embark on the construction of 50 low-cost housing estates in 36 local government areas outside the capital.
Bature noted that the plan to take over a controlling share of KEDCO aligns with the governor’s broader goal of revamping Kano’s electricity sector, which includes improving power generation, transmission, and distribution.
According to the state government, a stronger role in KEDCO’s management will help drive long-overdue reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency, transparency, and service delivery in a sector burdened by persistent outages and ageing infrastructure.
Officials said the investment is also expected to fuel industrial expansion, support job creation, and attract both local and international investors, given Kano’s heavy dependence on reliable power for economic activity.
The State Executive Council has also approved the introduction and adoption of a new Kano State Electricity Policy under the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy. The policy sets out a long-term plan for sustainable energy development, promoting renewable energy integration, improving operations, and guaranteeing energy security for the state.
“The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains committed to transforming Kano into an energy-secure and business-friendly state that encourages innovation, industrialisation, and inclusive economic growth,” the statement said.
In another resolution, the government approved the establishment of 50 low-cost housing estates across 36 LGAs outside Kano metropolis, a move designed to ease the state’s housing deficit and broaden access to affordable accommodation.
The housing programme will prioritise low- and middle-income families and is expected to stimulate local economies by generating thousands of direct and indirect jobs for contractors, engineers, builders, and artisans.
Each estate will come with key infrastructure, including access roads, electricity, and water supply, to ensure livable and sustainable communities.
“This initiative reflects Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to equitable development and his vision to ensure every part of the state benefits from sustainable infrastructure,” the statement added.
The government reiterated its commitment to financing projects that uplift living conditions and promote socio-economic development across Kano State.
