The Federal Government has announced that from October 6, 2025, all academic qualifications presented by staff and recruits across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and higher institutions must undergo verification through the National Credential Verification Service (NCVS).

The policy, outlined in a circular by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, requires every appointment to be cleared under the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) programme. The NCVS will assign each credential a National Credential Number (NCN) and embed digital security features, including QR codes, for instant validation.

Education Minister Tunji Alausa, who introduced NERD in March 2025, said the initiative was designed to combat academic fraud and bogus honours that have damaged Nigeria’s reputation. Akume stressed that the framework replaces the old system where institutions alone handled verification, creating a uniform national standard.

Haula Galadima, NERD’s Executive Director of Communication and Cybersecurity, confirmed readiness for nationwide rollout, urging MDAs, schools, and private organisations to register focal officers. She said the reform enhances education integrity, protects national security, and boosts Nigeria’s global competitiveness.

The NERD Governing Council, chaired by the Minister of Education, includes the NUC, NBTE, NCCE, National Library, Data Protection Commission, and leadership of tertiary institutions nationwide.
