Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the Federal Government over the release of abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi State, calling it a reflection of Nigeria’s failing security, not a success. He said the return of the students is “not a trophy moment” but proof that terrorists operate freely, negotiate openly, and set terms while government officials issue statements to save face.
Atiku’s remarks responded to comments by Presidential Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, who said the DSS and military tracked the kidnappers in real time and secured the girls’ release without paying ransom. Onanuga added that operations must be cautious to avoid civilian casualties.
The former vice president rejected this explanation, asking why the kidnappers were not arrested or neutralized if they were under surveillance. He said celebrating negotiations with criminals sends the wrong message and allows abductions to continue.
The abduction occurred on November 17, when armed men attacked the Government Girls’ Secondary School in Maga, killing a staff member and kidnapping 25 students. One student escaped, leaving 24 in captivity until their release on Tuesday.
President Bola Tinubu welcomed the girls’ return, praising security agencies and directing more forces to troubled areas. Kebbi Governor Nasir Idris confirmed that no ransom was paid, attributing the rescue to coordinated action by security personnel.
